Eventually, the team was stumbled onto by a group of adventurers in Forge Of Fury. Ghared and two guards met the adventurers, but relations turned sour when he tried to convince Wurgym Caurakril to kill his fellow dwarves in his sleep, and the thief was offended when Bialwa Norgalt suggested that duergar and dwarves should work together. They attacked but quickly lost, and as Ghared fled to shout a warning to the others, Bialwa blasted his brain with necrotic magic. When the adventurers ran away, Snurrevin sent his body into the river leading to the Black Lake, in lieu of a proper burial.
A Thuldûmkarak-born spy employed by the respected captain Nimira Blastringer, Ghared was not trusted much by his Dark Dwarf compatriots, but was valued for his dungeoneering Rogue abilities and quick intellect. As a result, he was tasked to be the scout for a crew invading Khundrukar. The clan's smith Snurrevin Silthammer was interested in analyzing legendary weapons forged by Durgeddin Stonehammer, and in the litany of semiprecious minerals contained in Khundrukar's "Glitterhame".
With his skills navigating the cave systems around Stone Tooth, Ghared was eventually able to find a hidden entrance behind a waterfall. It lead to the Black Lake, and their crew of six went up the chain ladder into the cursed halls of Khundrukar's foundry. Assaulted by undead, including the Ghost of Arundil Dhaldohr, they abandoned the dwarf-halls but were disappointed to find the door to the Glitterhame was locked. Furthermore, everything of value in the areas accessible to them had been raided. The team turned to leave, but found that the young Black Dragon Zyrmintyl had re-entered the Black Lake; by chance, she had been out hunting when the duergar had first arrived.
Locked from going forward, fearing the northern halls, and also in danger of going back, the duergar were stuck. With a few month's worth of rations, they decided to attempt to leave by slaying the dragon: to do so, Snurrevin proposed they attempt to forge a weapon capable of destroying the beast. The dwarves worked relentlessly at the forge, but could not successfully produce a Dragon Slayer as they lacked the proper materials.
