Having chosen to spare rather than kill the young 'king', the group's plan needed to change and quickly. They still had other targets to find within the stronghold, and had wisely realized that they would likely never get a chance such as this to find them again. But first, they would need to decide how to protect Nathaniel and deal with Catriona Thorne before she alerted the whole castle to their presence. They debated several options before ultimately deciding that the most straightforward one would be to simply ambush her upon her return to the tower, a plan that was soon carried out with ease and efficiency. Once she was captured, Miwa was able to extract some amount of useful information from her regarding The Iron Elementalist that they sought; namely that he hardly left his underground laboratory and that the entrance to it was hidden somewhere in his chambers in the uppermost floor of the stronghold. With all the could be gained from her found, Sarantyr ended her life and the group quickly set off across the castle, wishing to waste none of the lead they had gained by hiding their presence so far.
Upon arriving at the elementalist's chambers a quick search supported Catriona's statement that he spent very little time here. The room seemed barely lived in at all and contained nearly no trace of what it's inhabitant may be up too, though it was clear from Okhtus' search of the closet that the elementalist was not the only occupant. Within he discovered women's clothing, seemingly sized for a Dwarf* but made of fabrics and materials the likes of which he had never seen. With a quickness of conclusion-jumping that could only be had by a jumping spider, Okhtus surmised that, whoever this woman really was, it seemed that she and the elementalist were in some kind of relationship. Shortly after, the other's search of the room finally revealed the secret door that they knew was here something and the group found themselves looking into a long elevator shaft, cleverly hidden behind a moveable stone wall. In a stroke of luck, the key that Nathaniel had given them matched the lock of the elevator's control mechanisms and the group descended into the laboratory, though not before instructing Nathaniel to wait for their return at the top and ensure that the door was locked and barred.
Below, they found themselves looking into a massive laboratory filled with all kinds of strange technology and alchemical equipment, though it was dominated by one massive machine of note. It was nearly twenty feet across and roughly dome-shaped, with eight legs descending from the upper dome arranged in an almost cage like fashion, all of which were constructed from a strange brassy metal that seemed to bubble and twist beneath it's metallic "skin". In its center was a raised circle approximately 10 feet in diameter which glowed with a brilliant white light that would intermittently pulse with brilliant colors as well as a console which was unfamiliar to most of the group, but which Sarantyr recognized as a touch-screen device of some kind. They saw there as well both Velannah and The Iron Elementalist, both of whom were deep in focus working on the machine, and didn't initially notice their arrival, allowing the party a moment to plan their approach and spring their ambush.
As the party began to spring from the shadows, the pair were initially merely confused at their arrival and not immediately hostile, instead continuing to work on whatever tinkering they were performing to the device. Undeterred by the blows raining harmlessly against her strange armor, Velannah tried at first to simply ignore and then distract them when that proved ineffective as Ivanoh continued to sculpt the metal within the machine. Seeing the futility of their attacks so far, Okhtus turned his technical expertise to finding a solution, recognizing both a weakness to electricity in the systems which seemed to power her armor as well as a massive source of it just a few feet away in the generator that the strange device was connected to. Quickly, he rushed over to the bundle of cables, severing them, before dragging them back to the unsuspecting Dwarf and driving the still sparking ends into her chest.
The area erupted in a surge of electrical energy and Velannah screamed in pain, a great blow clearly having been dealt to her, though not without considerable collateral damage to those nearby. Almost instantaneously and alarm began to ring out from the machine as various warning light started to flash a concerning red. It seemed that whatever Okhtus had just disconnected from the device had been stabilizing it in some fashion and that, now without it, the device was beginning to melt down. Panic rising in her, Velannah staggered to her feet and, ordering Ivanoh to halt his worried advance towards her, slammed several buttons on the system one of which raised a magical barrier around the machine, blasting the intruders away, the other of which activated a mechanical creature that had been lying dormant just across the room. The golem lumbered to life and began to advance on the group, which Velannah hoped would distract them long enough for her and Ivanoh to stabilize the device long enough to activate the "transporter" within.
The group, however, recognized the golem for the distraction it was and, while Robin fought to keep the thing distracted, Sylf worked to bring the barrier down and Okhtus tried to understand the mechanism inside, hoping that it could provide them an escape route instead as they now feared that there was no way they could get away in time if this thing truly were to detonate with the power that Velannah feared. Meanwhile, Miwa empowered his friends with what magic he could before retunring back up the elevator to retrieve Nathaniel, eager not to leave him behind when they teleported away.
Inside the dome, Velannah and Ivanoh continued to try to fix the machine, though they quickly discovered that without a replacement for the power source that Okhtus had effectively destroyed, there was little they could do outside of buy time. Realizing this, Velannah activated another device which sent a pulse of light through the room which passed by all but Robin and Sylf harmlessly, upon which it left behind a glowing that seemed to cling to their skin. Upon seeing this, both Velannah and Ivanoh were visibly shocked, with Velannah stating her shock that not one but two of the "elemental keys" would simply walk through their door. Ivanoh's shock didn't last long however as he quickly turned his attention towards capturing them both for some unknown, but presumably bad, purpose.
Sylf was ultimately to quick for him but Robin was not so lucky, distracted as she was by the deadly automaton, and, as the barrier finally shattered under Sylf's blows, she found herself ensnared by unrelenting iron bands summoned form beneath the earth. She had just enough time to try fruitlessly to wriggle free before the unthinking automaton pummeled her with another massive blow and she fell unconscious.
The rest of the group rushed to save their helpless friend but, try as they might, they were unable to stop her from being carried by the elementalist's power into the heart of the machine, suspending her there with tendrils of energy which seemed to begin drawing something from within her and siphoning it into the device as crystals of ice erupted painfully from her body, shattering the iron which bound her. Unsure if they even could free her anymore, Okhtus took a different approach and seized upon the elementalist's distraction in order to capture him in turn, hoping that he was correct about the bond that he and Velannah shared and that it would be enough to stay her hand. It would have worked had it not been for the last minute change of heart in Ivanoh himself who told her to go and that "if she succeeded, nothing they could do to him would matter". Now steeled in her resolve, Velannah activated the machine, which began to shudder and glow with a brilliant pale blue light as it whirred into motion.
Knowing that they now only had a moment to reach the transporter pad before the device activated, the others raced to reach the pad Okhtus managed to shove Velannah and Ivanoh aside and Sylf made a last ditch effort to save Robin who still hung, unconscious, above them. As everyone else clustered onto the pad, he climbed up one of the legs making him able to reach just high enough in order to leap off and bring Robin crashing down with him. As the pair hit the ground there was one final moment of silence and then everything turned a pure, searing, white.
Had they been in any place where sound held meaning they group may have cried out in pain as they found themselves suddenly and violently stretched, feeling for one long and terrible moment that they might be ripped apart into nothingness by the force pulling them. The moment passed, replaced with a brief and sharp snapping sensations as, just for the briefest of moments the group found themselves surrounded by pure nothing, not anywhere but rather someplace between the "anywheres". They saw for a moment many opalescent "gates" of brilliant shining hues, followed by a flash of a man clad all in black unfamiliar to all by Sylf and Sarantyr who seemed to be reaching out for them. Then, the stretching sensation returned and they were suddenly and violently pulled away, falling from the nothingness into simple unconsciousness.
Sometime later, Miwa awoke groggily, finding himself lying upon unfamiliar earth, the air around him thick with sulfur and smoke, and his friends lying still unconscious on the ground around him. Just as he took this all in, a strange creature appeared, bipedal but beastial in form, with two long scythe-like appendages where hands would typically be. As Miwa drug himself to his feet, fighting exhaustion, the creature stalked closer, sightlessly sniffing the air around him seemingly searching for something in him. A moment of tension hung in the air as Miwa waited for the seemingly inevitable attack, but, before it could come a spear of light shot through the creature's body from behind, killing it.
As the creature fell, dissolving into brimstone, a figure was revealed a short ways off. Golden haired and beautiful, dressed in flowing white and wearing a dangerous smile, he bowed in greeting to Miwa, and introduced himself as Ky'ito, a self-proclaimed Prince of these lands, before finally welcoming him and his friends to his homeland of Hellas.
