Isolde Zannan

Isolde Zannan was born in extreme poverty in Karthene, where her survival depended on tracking debts, favors, and shortages. She learned to read by studying discarded records and invoices and quickly developed a strong memory for numbers, routes, and transactions. As she grew older, she used this skill to settle disputes and track missing goods, building a reputation for intelligence and precision as a "finder of things." She was eventually noticed by the Fold after disrupting one of their financial operations while working independently. Rather than eliminating her, they recruited her and subjected her to their indoctrination process. Isolde accepted this, as the organization gave her access to knowledge and structure she could not reach on her own.

Within the Fold, she advanced quickly due to her natural aptitude for analysis and magical theory, a useful skill for reading old Wild Magic studies and musings on the nature of VirathulShe showed an unusual talent for Magery, especially in Evocation magic, a useful skill for a battle mage. As Isolde rose in rank, the Fold granted her the title of "V", establishing her as a leader. She became known as "Volition", reflecting her disciplined mindset and sense of will that brought her from paupery to power. She became known for strict control over her work and decisions, and for prioritizing outcomes over following the oft-cited traditions of the cult.

Though only classified as a "junior" V within the Fold’s leadership structure, Volition was assigned alongside Vex to establish the Undermire as a logistical hub for Fold operations. She focused on building reliable trade and smuggling routes through the region, making deals with the Lizard King Ihrtos of the Caves of Jhirkorro and learning Draconic to communicate with the Lizardfolk tribes in the Murkmire Marshlands. She treated their alien and complex social structure as transactional, and built agreements that turned them into consistent labor and transport providers for Fold operations.

From a hidden base in the marsh, Volition oversaw the construction of a Teleportation Circle linking the directly beyond the Undermire Dwarf-Door, where a vault held generational wealth. This allowed the Fold to move goods and resources with less surface exposure, transporting goods to the Murkmire coast before teleporting them to that secured vault. Over time, the wizard had turned the region into a controlled transit network with the help of Vex, maintaining stability despite an ever-growing number of ships around the Splitmaw Strait and the Bay of Broken Tides.
