Following the guidance of his mysterious patron, the "Light," self-proclaimed hero Earnest Lyschtager was starving in a dinghy as the harsh seas overtook him. He somehow survived the boating disaster and was swept unconscious onto the shores of the Murkmire. The Adventurer awoke to find a lizardfolk fisher who only knew the Common word "Fold", but claiming he would "never fold for anyone," refused the directions and eventually flagged down a passing vessel. The ship belonged to Volition, and the Mage quickly realized Earnest was not one of their own and captured him.
Elsewhere in the swamp, Kig, a junior Martial Artist of the Outstretched Hand, was searching for his missing master, Edrin Flinthold. The Dwarf had been investigating a shadowy conspiracy that led her to the swamps, and the young Turtlefolk now followed her. Sloshing through the marshes, he attracted the attention of a lizardfolk hunting party; though he initially dodged the sudden strikes of their subchief, the reveal of a hidden spellcaster turned the fight against him. Ertrasti doubled in size and overpowered Kig, who was knocked out. He awoke imprisoned in the cell next to Earnest, barely weathering his attempts at conversion to the "Light." Attempts to communicate with the lizardfolk were not much better, and their attempt at bringing an enslaved Fishfolk interpreter failed; a conversation in Aquan did little to bridge the language barrier.
Meanwhile, the Druid Mulokha arrived as an envoy from a neighboring lizardfolk tribe, seeking answers for the increasing activity around the Caves of Jhirkorro and the rumors of strange alliances with outsiders. Instead of diplomacy, she was brought before the shaman Aarhtikish, who ordered her to "convert" or die. Rebuffing the attempts of guards to restrain her, Mulokha negotiated imprisonment in place of execution. Her imprisonment caused unrest among the tribe, but thankfully, the druid had learned Common and was able to speak with her fellow inmates; after enough conversation with Earnest, however, this proved less helpful than expected.
At the same time, the Rogue Ellenor Breatham and her Paladin companion Snapdragon Poplarchop entered the caves after the Break-In At Bleak End. Having experienced yet another disaster, Ellenor was now convinced that she was Cursed to lose everyone she cared for, in spite of her Fairy friend's reassurances. Regardless of their mutual melancholy, the pair agreed that they had to escape; after discovering Volition departing by keelboat toward a larger ship and a flurry of activity in the seas outside, the pair slipped deeper into the caves, destroying the teleportation circle behind them.
The pair eventually found the three captives, and began to make sense of their situation. Going by "Tula", Ellenor realized she needed allies, and sensed that these prisoners were friendly. She and Snapdragon revealed their battle against the Fold and the disappearance of their companions; Earnest shared his visions of great magical change centered on the swamp; Kig explained his master's investigation into the conspiracy surrounding the Phyracress elders; and Mulokha revealed the growing influence of the Fold among the lizardfolk. The druid explained that to earn the tribe's trust, she would likely need to complete the "Trail of Scales", a sacred rite considered too dangerous for most lizardfolk to attempt.
Believing they needed to work together to figure out the Cave's secrets, Tula recovered a chest in a nearby room containing the prisoners' equipment, silently knocking out its guard and hiding the body inside. She returned and began unlocking the cells of Kig and Mulokha, while Earnest simply summoned his Blade of Holy Vengeance and teleported through his prison bars. Despite six days of imprisonment, surviving only on stagnant water and Rat meat, this "paladin" now had faith that the Light would finally reveal all.
