In Break-In At Bleak End, Merben had convinced Don Coriander to lend him men and funds to rob the Alabaster Palace prior to a massive ball. The operation went horribly, resulting in a gang member's death; in response, the fairy had Merben beaten and tied up in a Demirealm of fairy magic. Coriander sent a letter out to Nessa Nina informing her of grandson's imminent death. She arrived with three former members of the Whistledrop Crew to beg for Merben's life. Coriander sent Nessa Nina, Mercy, Ellenor Breatham, and Punmiri Tel-Phaeun on a mission to Farrozandmar. In exchange for the key, he would let Merben live and give them a small cut of the treasure behind the Undermire Dwarf-Door.
After a successful heist, they returned from Aone Island with a tracing of the Dwarf-Door Tattoo Key, and were willing to accompany the Don as he broke in. Once they returned successfully, Coriander honored their agreement and released him. Reunited with his grandmother and former companions, Merben joined the Glitterati expedition into the Murkmire Marshlands and the Undermire, determined to see the venture through after inadvertently setting it in motion.
Though less experienced than many around him, Merben contributed where he could during the march through the marshlands and the final assault on the Fold's hidden vault. During the disastrous battle beyond the Undermire Dwarf-Door, he fought alongside the others while taking cover among the immense treasure hoard. When Volition activated the symbol of Virathul and triggered a catastrophic cave-in, Merben was swept away by the collapsing tunnels. Nessa refused to abandon him, diving after her grandson into the landslide.
The two just barely survived the collapse together, with Nessa saving Merben in the nick of time. With Punmiri's aid, they eventually found themselves stranded in tunnels near the Lockford Lightspring, separated from the rest of the Whistledrop Crew.
